Rheology can act as a bridge that links changes to the formulation with product performance. Advanced and correct rheological data can help to optimise products and process conditions, thereby saving costs and minimising potential waste. The first discussions were based on the properties and behaviors of several materials as asphalt, lubricants, paints, plastics and rubber. Nowadays, the scope is even wider. Significant advances have been made in rheometry for example, in fields like coatings, suspensions and polymers rheology.

To understand rheology it is important to know that ideal solids, also named Hooke solids, can deform elastically and the energy required for the deformation is fully recovered when the stresses are removed. Rheological additives are able to modify the flow, viscosity and deformation properties, according to different needs. The rheology also helps to explain the polymer extrusion and temperature influence in deformation process. All this progress, however, would not be possible without the advances in equipment, like rheometers and viscometers. These devices are used to evaluate how all these materials behavior under different temperature and stress levels, simulating some real industrial and/or handling conditions.

Specialist Chemist and Materials Engineering PhD. 29 years dedicated to DuPont with experience on OEM automotive coatings. During his carrier, he was responsible for e-coat, primers, base coats and clear coats which supplied several cars manufactures in Brazil. Received the ABRAFATI Coatings Science Award in four editions (2004, 2006, 2010 and 2017) and DuPont SHE Award (2002 and 2003). Papers published in congresses and technical magazines, as European Coatings, Chemical Engineering and Química e Derivados (Brazil). One of the authors of the book “Tintas e Vernizes, Ciência e Tecnologia (Paint and Varnishes, Science and Technology) 2009”. In 2020 published the book “Primers de Eletrodeposição Catódica (Cathodic Electrodeposition Primers, Science and Technology)”. Coaching in OEM coatings technology for engineers, technicians and customers (GM, Ford, VW, FIAT, TOYOTA, Honda, Yamaha, Volvo, Faurecia, Plascar). Today he works as technical consultant and post-graduation and advisor professor in Oswaldo Cruz College – São Paulo Brazil, in the Coatings and Surface Engineering Course.
